The Daily Ledger: 7 October 2026

Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade went live on the Sepolia testnet: what enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists change. Plus India's first rate rise since 2023, OKX's new investors, a Zcash ETF filing and Abstract's shutdown.

THE DAILY LEDGER

7 October 2026
Ethereum's next upgrade activates on its main test network, India's central bank raises rates, and OKX adds Circle, Ripple and Standard Chartered's venture arm as investors.

Reporting window: 6 October 2026, 06:00 UTC to 7 October, 06:00 UTC (08:00 Europe/Stockholm). Data cutoff: 7 October, 06:00 UTC. Prices are CoinGecko 00:00 UTC daily snapshots compared against the previous day's 00:00 UTC snapshot, not a rolling 24 hours. This issue was published retrospectively on 16 October 2026 to fill a gap in the archive; it uses only information available at the cutoff.

What is the Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade? It is Ethereum's next hard fork, a coordinated rule change that every node must adopt, and on 6 October at 13:53:36 UTC it activated on Sepolia, the main public test network. It moves the auction between block builders and validators into the protocol and prepares Ethereum for larger blocks. Nothing changed on mainnet, and no mainnet date has been set.

1. The Day in Numbers

  • Bitcoin: $85,540, down 0.27 percent at 00:00 UTC on 7 October, against the previous day's 00:00 UTC snapshot. CoinGecko daily data.
  • Ether: $2,697.17, down 0.49 percent on the same basis.
  • Fear and Greed: 71, Greed, down 2 points from 73. Alternative.me daily reading.
  • After the snapshot: CoinGecko's hourly series shows bitcoin falling from $85,527 at 01:00 UTC to $83,848 at 03:00 UTC, then $84,086 at 05:00 UTC. That is intraday, not a completed day.
  • Dollar stablecoins in circulation: $307.77 billion in DefiLlama's 6 October daily reading.

2. What is the Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade?

Glamsterdam pairs an execution layer upgrade, Amsterdam, with a consensus layer upgrade, Gloas. The Ethereum Foundation's announcement lists 18 core changes, and two lead.

The first is enshrined proposer-builder separation, or ePBS. Specialist builders assemble blocks and validators propose them, a split that now relies on trusted middleware. Under ePBS the proposer includes a builder's commitment, the builder then reveals the block's transactions, the protocol handles payment, and a committee attests whether the reveal arrived on time. The aim is to remove the trusted middleman and give validators more time to check execution.

The second is block-level access lists (EIP-7928): each block records which accounts and storage it touches, so clients can read state and validate transactions in parallel. Gas repricing makes creating new state more expensive.

Sepolia is also testing capacity. Validators on updated clients can propose blocks with a 200 million gas limit, against about 60 million before, and Prysm shipped a last-minute release so that happens automatically. Hoodi and mainnet dates remain undecided, and the Foundation says ordinary holders need to do nothing.

Two panels. Left: the four steps of enshrined proposer-builder separation under EIP-7732. A builder bids and commits to a block it has not yet shown, the proposer includes that commitment in its beacon block while the protocol handles payment, the builder reveals the payload, and a committee attests whether the payload and blob data arrived on time. Right: Glamsterdam activated on Sepolia at epoch 353,024 on 6 October 2026 at 13:53:36 UTC, while Hoodi and mainnet dates are not decided, and a bar comparison shows the Sepolia gas limit test option of 200 million gas against about 60 million before.

3. Today's Headlines

India raises rates for the first time since 2023

The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent on 7 October, its first increase since February 2023. Angel One's report links the move to higher crude oil prices and pressure on the rupee. It follows the Federal Reserve's own increase in September.

OKX adds Circle, Ripple and SC Ventures

OKX took new investment from Circle, Ripple, QRT and Standard Chartered's venture arm at a $25 billion pre-money valuation. The amount was not disclosed.

A Winklevoss-sponsored Zcash ETF filing

A preliminary S-1 filed on 6 October proposes a Nasdaq-listed fund under the ticker WINK, with a 0.25 percent fee and affiliate Gemini as custodian. A Winklevoss fund's interest in buying up to $100 million of shares is not binding, and nothing can be sold until the filing is effective.

A payments firm sues Tether over a frozen wallet

Conduit alleges in a New York federal complaint that Tether froze $2.76 million of its USDT without justification in September 2025. These are allegations, and Decrypt's report carried no response from Tether. Our explainer covers how stablecoin address freezes work.

4. Security Note

Abstract, the Ethereum layer 2 network built by Pudgy Penguins owner Igloo, will shut down on 15 December, and funds left after that date will be inaccessible. About $48 million sat on the chain before the announcement, an L2BEAT estimate. Abstract warned users about impersonators and fake migration sites.

The rule: reach a migration page only from an address you typed or the project's own documentation, never from a reply, direct message or search advert. No genuine migration asks for a seed phrase. The native bridge carries a stated delay of about three hours, so an offer to skip it for a fee is a reason to stop. Our letter on what happens to your tokens when a blockchain shuts down covers exits.

5. From the Academy Library

The blockchain architecture guide explains how execution and consensus layers divide the work that Glamsterdam upgrades. Our MEV entry covers the money behind block building.

A testnet fork is a rehearsal. The useful signal comes later, when client teams decide what Sepolia's heavier blocks justify for mainnet.
