THE DAILY LEDGER

14 October 2026
Solana schedules its biggest consensus change for 21 October, Fed officials keep a further rate rise in view before today's inflation data, and Ledger explains how the CryptoBilis implant stole recovery phrases.

Reporting window: 13 October 2026, 06:00 UTC to 14 October, 06:00 UTC (08:00 Europe/Stockholm). Data cutoff: 14 October, 06:00 UTC, before the US September CPI release at 12:30 UTC. Prices are CoinGecko 00:00 UTC daily snapshots compared with the previous day's 00:00 UTC snapshot. This issue was published retrospectively on 16 October 2026 to fill a gap in the archive; it uses only information available at the cutoff.

What is transaction finality in blockchain? It is the point after which a confirmed transaction cannot be reversed without breaking the network's rules or paying an enormous cost. On 13 October, Anza, which builds Solana's main validator software, set 21 October for Alpenglow, a new voting system meant to cut Solana's finality from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.

1. The Day in Numbers

  • Bitcoin: $83,115 at 00:00 UTC, up 1.6 percent against the previous day's 00:00 UTC snapshot of $81,795. CoinGecko daily data.
  • Ether: $2,496.59 at 00:00 UTC, up 2.1 percent on the same basis.
  • Fear and Greed: 62, Greed, up 5 points from 57. Alternative.me daily reading, 14 October, 00:00 UTC.
  • US spot ETFs, Tuesday 13 October: bitcoin funds took in a net $175.6 million and ether funds $24.8 million, per this flow tally. Completed session.

2. What is transaction finality, and what Alpenglow changes

Blockchains reach finality in different ways. Bitcoin has no fixed point: each new block, about every ten minutes, adds a confirmation that makes reversal harder. Ethereum finalises checkpoints once validators holding two-thirds of staked ETH agree, normally after about 13 minutes; undoing one would cost an attacker at least a third of all staked ETH.

Solana today offers a fast "confirmed" status, meaning more than two-thirds of stake has voted on a block, and full finality after about 12.8 seconds under its current TowerBFT voting. Alpenglow's Votor component finalises a block in one round of voting if 80 percent of stake responds, or two rounds at 60 percent, and is designed to keep working with 20 percent of stake hostile and another 20 percent offline. Anza calls the 150 millisecond figure "an expectation, not a constant."

Faster finality matters to anyone waiting on certainty: a merchant or a bridge could release goods or funds sooner. Two caveats. Votes leave the blockchain, so Solana's reported transaction count will fall even if real activity does not. And validators running Firedancer-family clients, about 15.8 percent of stake among the 500 largest by Solana Compass's count, must switch software for the migration.

Log-scale bar chart of typical time to finality: Ethereum about 12.8 minutes over two epochs, Solana under TowerBFT about 12.8 seconds, and Solana under Alpenglow an expected median of about 150 milliseconds, labelled an expectation rather than a constant. Bitcoin is shown without a bar because it has no fixed finality point; each block of about ten minutes adds a confirmation. A lower panel explains the Votor rule: a block is final after one round if 80 percent of stake votes, or after two rounds if only 60 percent responds, with tolerance for 20 percent adversarial and 20 percent offline stake.
Solana figures from Anza's Alpenglow paper summary; Ethereum time computed from ethereum.org slot and epoch lengths. Typical values, not guarantees.

3. Today's Headlines

Fed officials keep one more rise in view

New York Fed President John Williams still sees one more rate increase as appropriate this year but no need for more in 2027. September CPI arrives at 12:30 UTC today; this issue went to press before it.

BNY finances a tokenised Treasury

Citadel Securities bought a two-year Treasury note, held it as a token on BNY's private ledger, settled within minutes and pledged it in an overnight repo, a short-term secured loan. No size was disclosed.

UK court applies Chinese law to seized bitcoin claims

A High Court ruling reported on 13 October found that Chinese law governs fraud victims' claims to 61,000 BTC seized in the Zhimin Qian case. Ownership is not yet decided, and victims' lawyers are appealing.

4. Security Note

Ledger's 13 October update says an added chip in devices sold by reseller CryptoBilis read the recovery phrase off the screen during setup and sent it out over a mobile data connection. The secure chip and operating system were not modified. Ledger has asked resellers in seven Asian markets to halt sales; loss totals near $93 million are onchain researchers' estimates. The rule: do not initialise a CryptoBilis device, and if you used one, move funds to a new device with a newly generated phrase. Our wallet security checklist covers safe purchase and setup.

5. From the Academy Library

Our blockchain architecture guide explains how consensus fits into a chain's design, and proof of work versus proof of stake covers why finality differs between them. New readers can start at Academy School.

Finality is a promise about the past. The useful question is never only how fast, but what it would cost someone to break it.
