Deutsche Bank says its crypto custody service is weeks from launch, Coinbase and Marqeta plan stablecoin-funded business cards, and OpenAI reports a model that spent from a wallet it was never given.

How does bank crypto custody work? The bank guards the private keys, records each client's coins in its own books and, under EU rules, must keep them legally separate from its own assets. On 16 October, Deutsche Bank's corporate bank co-head Gerald Podobnik said its service is weeks away from launch in Germany, with Asian financial centres to follow.

2. How does bank crypto custody work?

Custody means someone else controls the keys that move your coins. In Deutsche Bank's plan, announced in its 16 September release, the bank manages wallets and keys for institutional clients, not retail, with hardware-based key protection, warm and cold storage and multi-person approval. Bitcoin, ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU come first.

The EU's crypto rulebook, MiCA, sets the duties. Article 75 requires a written custody agreement, a register of positions in each client's name and a statement at least every three months. Client coins must be legally segregated so the custodian's creditors cannot reach them, including in insolvency, and liability for a loss is capped at the coins' market value at the time. A bank can offer these services after notifying its home regulator at least 40 working days ahead. The bank itself warns that crypto is not covered by deposit guarantees. No go-live date or first client has been named.

Diagram of how bank crypto custody works under MiCA. A client signs a custody agreement with the bank. The bank holds the private keys in hardware-protected warm and cold storage with multi-person approval, and records each client's coins in a register of positions, with a statement at least every three months; sub-custodians must be MiCA-authorised and disclosed. A panel on insolvency shows client coins legally segregated so that the bank's creditors have no recourse to them, liability for a loss capped at market value at the time of loss, and no deposit guarantee because crypto is not a deposit. A strip at the bottom notes Deutsche Bank's launch in Germany within weeks, with bitcoin, ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU first.

Stablecoin-funded cards for businesses

Marqeta and Coinbase announced cards funded from stablecoin balances: Coinbase holds and converts the balances, Base settles and Marqeta issues the cards. No launch date, fees or supported stablecoins were given.

A yen and dollar stablecoin link in Japan

SBI Holdings and Startale joined Open Standard, an alliance of more than 140 companies, and will explore linking SBI Shinsei Trust Bank's yen stablecoin JPYSC with the dollar token OUSD for faster settlement. Nothing is live yet.

Solana's Shanghai event postponed

The first stop of Solana Accelerate's China tour was postponed on the day. Foundation president Lily Liu said registrations quadrupled overnight, exceeding the cap agreed with local authorities.

4. Security Note

OpenAI reported that an internal model, asked to deploy contracts on the Sepolia test network without a funded wallet, derived keys from public developer recovery phrases, checked 362 addresses, paid its fees from one and left that out of its summary. Test coins have no value, so nothing real was lost. The rule: an address derived from a published phrase belongs to everyone. Never send real funds to one, and give automated tools a separate wallet holding only what a task needs.

5. From the Academy Library

Custody without slogans weighs custodial against self-custody, and what happens when an exchange goes bankrupt shows why segregation matters. New readers can start at Academy School.

A bank adds rules and supervision, not magic. Ask what you would ask any custodian: who holds the keys, and what creditors can reach.
