THE DAILY LEDGER

3 September 2026
Bitcoin and Ether jump after conditional Federal Reserve remarks, forcing a large short squeeze while institutional access widens in the UAE

The market finally chose a direction. Bitcoin moved back above $80,000 and Ether kept pace, turning a quiet derivatives setup into a fast short squeeze. The move was large, but the cause was narrower: traders repriced the chance that the Federal Reserve could hold rates steady if inflation improves.

1. The Day in Numbers

  • Bitcoin: $81,297 at 16:00 UTC, up 5.2 percent over 24 hours.
  • Ethereum: $2,512, up 5.2 percent over 24 hours.
  • Fear and Greed Index: 65, Greed, up two points from Wednesday.
  • Liquidations: More than $500 million was liquidated over 24 hours, including about $416 million of shorts and $92 million of longs across more than 119,000 traders.
  • ETF flows: US spot Bitcoin ETFs added $101.1 million on 2 September, while Ether ETFs lost $48.2 million.

2. Today's Headlines

  1. Fed Governor Christopher Waller described a conditional case for holding rates. He said improving inflation could support no change, while hotter data could still justify a September increase. It was not a policy commitment.
  2. Standard Chartered launched institutional BTC and ETH spot trading in the UAE. The DFSA-regulated service provides deliverable assets through existing electronic and foreign-exchange interfaces.
  3. Bitcoin ETF inflows resumed while Ether and XRP streaks ended. Ether's $48.1 million outflow broke a 12 session inflow run, while XRP's outflow ended an 11 session run.
  4. Coinbase sought clearance for round-the-clock equity perpetuals. SEC and CFTC approvals would still be required. No product launch had been approved.
  5. SoFi and Payward agreed to connect banking settlement with Kraken infrastructure. The plan includes SoFiUSD support and around-the-clock institutional dollar settlement.

3. Security Note

Tracked funds linked to a reported Coldcard incident began moving from Bitcoin toward Ethereum through THORChain. Bitquery classified the address only as reported, not confirmed, so attribution remains uncertain. The useful rule is broader: if a hardware-wallet vendor or researcher reports a possible compromise, verify whether the problem concerns device keys, customer data, firmware, or an individual user's setup before moving funds. Those risks require different responses.

4. From the Academy Library

The Bitcoin Market Cycles and Macro Guide explains how rate expectations, liquidity, positioning, and fund flows can combine without becoming a reliable price forecast.

A short squeeze is evidence of crowded positioning, not proof of a new trend. Let the follow-through answer that question.
