THE DAILY LEDGER

27 August 2026
Bitcoin pushes back above $80,000 and drags mining stocks past AI names, Schwab widens its crypto shelf, and a Base lending market takes an oracle hit

The pause did not last. Bitcoin reclaimed $80,000 by midday and the rally spilled hardest into the names that had lagged it for months: miners. It is the kind of session where the headline number understates how much rotation happened underneath it.

1 — The Day in Numbers

  • Bitcoin: $80,599, up about 3.5 percent over 24 hours, with an intraday high near $80,800 after opening near $77,900.
  • Ethereum: $2,531, up roughly 3.7 percent over 24 hours, keeping pace with Bitcoin rather than leading it.
  • Fear and Greed Index: 71, Greed, up from 65 the day before, retracing most of Wednesday's cooling.
  • ETF flows: US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows slowed to about $232 million, extending an eight day streak to roughly $2.8 billion, while spot XRP funds posted their largest single day inflow since early January.

The clearest signal was not in the spot price. Bitcoin mining stocks Canaan, American Bitcoin, and Cango jumped as much as 67 percent, outrunning both Bitcoin itself and the AI infrastructure names that have crowded out mining as the market's favorite compute story this year.

2 — Today's Headlines

Security

  1. Moonwell is investigating a lending market exploit on Base. Security firms CertiK and PeckShield estimate losses near $8.7 million after an attacker manipulated the collateral price of the token MAMO to borrow against inflated value. The pattern is a familiar one: thin liquidity plus a manipulable price feed equals a drainable market.
  2. Core Lightning disclosed multiple vulnerabilities affecting its Bitcoin Lightning Network implementation and is preparing a security update. Node operators who cannot patch immediately were advised to run in offline mode to stay connected without exposing the affected code paths.

Institutional and markets

  1. Charles Schwab will add Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink to its crypto trading platform, expanding beyond Bitcoin and Ether just months after opening direct retail crypto trading, a sign that mainstream brokerages are widening access faster than expected.
  2. BlackRock's Robert Mitchnick said Bitcoin's declining correlation with equities is a constructive long term signal, pointing to renewed spot ETF inflows as evidence the asset is behaving more like an independent store of value than a risk-on trade.

World

  1. South Korea's Mirae Asset is mapping a $109 billion digital asset push built around its Digital X platform, targeting profitability by 2027, one of the largest institutional commitments to crypto infrastructure announced by an Asian asset manager this year.
  2. The Bank of England is set to receive a new innovation mandate covering stablecoins, expanding the central bank's remit to support digital payments innovation while keeping financial stability as the primary constraint.

3 — Security Note

Today's lesson comes from the Moonwell exploit: if a lending market lets you borrow against a thinly traded token, the price oracle is as much a part of the attack surface as the smart contract code. An attacker who can move a token's price on a low liquidity venue can manufacture collateral value that never existed. Before depositing into any lending protocol, check which price feeds it relies on and how much volume actually backs the assets you can borrow against. The guide on how to evaluate a crypto protocol covers oracle and liquidity risk in more depth.

For the broader context behind today's miner rally and the AI-versus-crypto compute debate, the letter on proof of work and proof of stake explains why mining economics still move independently of the coin price itself.
