Bitcoin cools below $79,000 as inflation data bites, the SEC sends a custody overhaul to the White House, and Europe gets a new euro stablecoin
Wednesday was a pause, not a reversal. Bitcoin gave back some of last week's gains after a hotter than expected inflation print, and the mood shifted from confident to watchful without breaking down.
1 — The Day in Numbers
- Bitcoin: $78,631, down about 0.4 percent over 24 hours after dipping under $78,000 intraday, still holding the bulk of last week's breakout.
- Ethereum: $2,446, down roughly 1.5 percent over 24 hours as risk appetite cooled alongside stocks and gold.
- Fear and Greed Index: 65, Greed, down from 74 the day before, the sharpest one day cooling in over a week.
- ETF flows: US spot Bitcoin ETFs extended an inflow streak that has now cut this year's net outflow deficit by more than half, though the pace slowed as prices pulled back.
The trigger was macro, not crypto specific. July's US PCE inflation reading came in slightly above forecast, and both stocks and gold fell alongside Bitcoin, a reminder that the asset still trades as a risk instrument first when the Federal Reserve's path is in question.
2 — Today's Headlines
Policy
- The SEC sent a crypto custody rule overhaul to the White House for review. The proposal would clarify how investment advisers and funds are permitted to hold digital assets for clients, a question that has slowed institutional adoption for years. It now moves through the standard interagency review process before any public rule text appears.
Institutional and markets
- Better and Coinbase launched Bitcoin backed mortgages generally available in the United States. Homebuyers can pledge Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment rather than selling it, extending a niche product category into the mainstream mortgage market.
- Bernstein raised its Bitcoin price framework while cutting its target for a large corporate Bitcoin holder, illustrating that analyst optimism about the asset does not automatically extend to every company that holds it on a balance sheet.
World
- Revolut rolled out a euro denominated stablecoin, EURR, across three European markets. The Bridge issued token will support multiple blockchains and external wallets, with broader European Economic Area availability expected later this year, a sign that regulated European fintechs are moving into stablecoin issuance rather than leaving it to crypto native firms.
- Japan's Financial Services Agency, Finance Ministry, and central bank agreed to study a blockchain fast lane for securities cash settlement, aiming for a development plan by early 2027. Slow, deliberate, and typically Japanese in pace, but notable that the country's core financial regulators are now formally exploring the infrastructure together.
3 — Security Note
Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm's retrial was delayed to April 2027 while the court weighs his motion for acquittal. Whatever the eventual outcome, the case remains the clearest live example of the legal exposure that can attach to people who write privacy tooling rather than people who misuse it. If you build or contribute to open source crypto infrastructure, understand that intent and knowledge are being tested in court, not just code. The lexicon entry on decentralized governance is a useful starting point for thinking about where responsibility sits in systems with no central operator.
4 — From the Academy Library
For background on today's custody headline, the letter on custody without slogans lays out the practical difference between self custody, exchange custody, and the qualified custodian model regulators are trying to formalize.
Watch the levels, ignore the noise, and see you tomorrow.
