Staking Slashing
Learn how Ethereum slashing and proof-of-stake penalties work, which validator actions are slashable, and what slashing risk means for delegators.
What Is Ethereum Slashing?
On Ethereum, slashing is reserved for specific consensus violations such as proposing conflicting blocks or submitting contradictory attestations. Ordinary missed duties usually reduce rewards instead of triggering a slash, while a large correlated failure can increase penalties.
Why Slashing is Crucial for Network Consensus
In Proof of Work, miners who attack the network lose physical money through wasted electricity hardware costs.
In Proof of Stake, validators have no physical electricity costs. Slashing creates the necessary financial penalty (skin in the game) by making attacks economically catastrophic for malicious actors.
Primary Slashing Offenses
- Double Signing (Equivocation): A validator signs two conflicting blocks at the exact same block height, attempting to create a chain split or execute a double spend attack. This triggers immediate, severe capital slashing.
- Surround Voting: A validator votes on block proposals that contradict previous finalized consensus checkpoints.
- Extended Inactivity and Downtime (Liveness Faults): While minor downtime typically results in small fee penalties, prolonged coordinated offline periods can trigger inactivity leak slashing to restore network finality.
What Slashing Means for Delegators
Delegator exposure depends on the network and staking service. Some pools pass validator penalties to users, some spread losses across a pool, and some offer contractual protection with separate counterparty risk.
- Before staking: Check the operator's slashing history, infrastructure design, insurance terms, custody model, and how losses are allocated.
