Bitcoin Halving
Learn how the Bitcoin halving cycle cuts block rewards every 210,000 blocks, affects miner economics, and changes new supply without guaranteeing price.
What Is the Bitcoin Halving Cycle?
The Bitcoin halving cycle is the repeating period between subsidy reductions. Each halving cuts the new BTC paid per block by 50 percent, while market behavior during the surrounding years also depends on demand, liquidity, miner economics, and investor positioning.
The Programmatic Supply Schedule
Satoshi Nakamoto designed Bitcoin with a strictly capped terminal supply of 21 million coins to prevent inflation. The halving is the automated mechanism that controls this distribution.
Historical Halving Progression
- 2009 Launch: 50.00 BTC reward per block.
- 2012 First Halving: 25.00 BTC reward per block.
- 2016 Second Halving: 12.50 BTC reward per block.
- 2020 Third Halving: 6.25 BTC reward per block.
- 2024 Fourth Halving: 3.125 BTC reward per block (only 450 new coins created globally each day).
The Supply Shock Dynamic
Because Bitcoin has an inelastic supply, miners cannot produce more coins simply because market demand rises.
When demand stays steady while new issuance falls, fewer newly mined coins are available to absorb that demand. This changes one supply input, but it does not guarantee a price increase or a 12-to-18-month timetable; liquidity, leverage, regulation, and broader markets still matter.
Impact on Miners and Network Security
- Miner Revenue Pressure: Inefficient mining operations with high electricity costs face revenue compression, leading to hardware upgrades or operational capitulation.
- Difficulty Adjustment Balance: If miners disconnect machines, the network difficulty automatically adjusts downward to keep block generation steady at 10 minutes.
