Pig Butchering Scams

A cryptocurrency investment confidence scam builds trust, shows invented profits, then extracts fees. Why the early successful withdrawal is part of the fraud.

The Approach Is Manufactured

Contact is not stumbled into. It is engineered. The FBI's 2025 internet crime report lists text messages, social media, advertisements and dating applications as starting points, with the conversation moved quickly to a private messaging app.

Treating this as purely a romance scam leaves people unguarded, because a wrong number text and a work from home advertisement lead to exactly the same place. The relationship or mentor role is then built patiently, often over weeks, before investment is ever mentioned.

The Withdrawal That Builds Trust

The platform shows fabricated profits, and sometimes offers loans to help enlarge the position. Early on, the victim is walked through a small successful withdrawal.

That step is the engine of the fraud rather than evidence against it. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission documents it explicitly: the fraudsters may walk the victim through a withdrawal to demonstrate the site can be trusted. Paying out a small amount to secure a much larger deposit is simply cheap.

The Fee Phase

When the victim tries to withdraw the grown balance, the account locks and a sequence of taxes, commissions and verification charges appears, each presented as the final one.

This is the part worth understanding clearly: nothing is being withheld, because nothing was ever held. The balance was a number on a screen. The fee phase is a second extraction from someone who has already lost everything, which is why paying it never works, no matter how close the finish line looks.

The same report notes that victims are then targeted again by recovery scams, so the fraud comes with a planned sequel. It also records that these operations are largely run by organised criminal enterprises in Southeast Asia using victims of human trafficking as forced labour, and that of the victims the FBI notified through one 2025 operation, 78 percent did not know they were being scammed. The person on the other end of the conversation may not be there willingly either.

What the Chain Shows

Each victim is typically given a unique deposit address, and those addresses drain into shared consolidation wallets. That pattern is what lets analysts tie apparently unconnected victims to a single operation, and it is why reporting promptly with your transaction hashes has real value even when your own funds are unrecoverable.

The practical rule: treat any investment introduced by someone who contacted you first as fraudulent until proven otherwise, however long the relationship has run and however warm it feels. A platform you can only reach through a link, and cannot find independently, is not a venue. Our entry on tracing and recovering stolen crypto covers what happens next.
